Amazon.co.uk Review
As one of the UK's leading opera singers, bass-baritone Bryn Terfel is known and universally admired for his recordings and live performances. He has, however, taken time out to head back to Wales and record a disc of songs and hymns from his homeland. To quote "Cymru Fach", "There's a place for the whole of her in my heart, dearest Wales. Each mountain, each valley, each river, dearest Wales. 'Though I travel far from her hilltops, far from her resounding waterfalls, within minutes I will dream my way back from afar to that sanctuary of my childhood: dearest Wales". The resulting CD comprises 21 tracks, from the rousing and joyous "Cwm Rhondda" to the poignant and introspective "My Little Welsh Home". Joined by the massed forces of the Black Mountain Chorus, Risca Male Choir and the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, Terfel is the perfect ambassador for this music, while Chris Hazell should be commended for his imaginative orchestrations of 17 of the tracks. The sleeve notes for We'll Keep a Welcome cite the Welsh proverb "To be born Welsh is to be born with music in your blood and poetry in your soul". Terfel was born with music, poetry and a little bit of magic, all of which he brings to this CD. Whether or not you are Welsh, this is one disc sure to send tingles up and down your spine. --Rebecca Agnew

5 out of 5 stars Bryn Terfel's "On The Black Hill".   January 2, 2010

For years in my mind's eye, Bryn was Amos Jones from Bruce Chatwin's literary masterpiece "On The Black Hill". I even approached him about playing the part with a mind for myself to write the libretto. A few years later with the dream ever present, I listen to this album to spur me on, in the hope that one day Welsh National Opera commision the project and bring an iconic modern opera to life. You see it was "We'll Keep A Welcome" that inspired the concept of bringing that great novel to life in opera form. This CD is truly amazing. It encapsulates the beauty of Wales in such a way as to transport you to that amazing musical country within seconds of closing your eyes. It is astounding the atmosphere Bryn conjures on this collection and I have never found a welsh album to rival it in terms of passion and sheer beauty. This is one of the great singer's most personal and heartfelt achievements. I put it alongside the Alan Jay Lerner and Rodgers & Hammerstein albums as essential.

I was given this album as a Christmas present, and I can only say it's one of the best presents I've ever received! Lots of old favourites are here, including 'Sosban fach' and of course 'Land of my Fathers'. But for me the highlights are a truly rousing rendering of 'Men of Harlech' (enough to make even an army of the dead want to rise and fight!)and Bryn's impassioned delivery of one of the greatest of hymns, 'Cwm Rhondda (Bread of Heaven)'. Even if one is not religious (and I am not), this must surely move all who hear it - it had me in tears. It comes from the guts, and it goes straight to the guts. Terrific stuff!

As an ex pat Welsh girl living in NZ, just to listen to it made me imagine I was back amongst the hills and valleys of Wales. My NZ husband revels in the rousing chorus of Men of Harlech, and I sobbed to my little Welsh home. Fantastic!!! I'll be playing this when we 'Come home again to Wales' in two years.

Bryn Terfyl and the other musicians have produced a tour de force of Welsh popular and historical music. Terfyl is superlative and he ranges his voice from his natural bass-baritone to almost tenor - moving along the scale as the songs require. If one is Welsh these songs vary between a soaring rendition to fight for language and culture to a sentimetal journey through what Welshness is. However, even if one is not Welsh then the sheer quality and power of these recordings is a joy to wallow in. (Although medieval anglo-saxons might be chilled by some of the lyrics!). One simply cannot praise this album sufficiently, let alone too much. Mike Gable

Bryn has excelled himself once again with this moving, rousing and patriotic offering. Technically wonderful, precise yet human and warm, his voice and repertoire continue to improve and mature. He sings with pride, warmth depth and compassion on this wonderful CD.
