Amazon.co.uk Review Already on course to be one of the year's biggest sellers, Only By the Night has sealed Kings of Leon's unlikely position as Britain's favourite American rock band. The Followill brothers (and cousin) have always been tagged as part of a southern rock tradition of family bands such as the Allmans and Lynyrd Skynyrd, a label they vehemently refuted. But the skinny lads certainly looked like a classic rock act, even as they took musical inspiration from indie contemporaries The Strokes and eighties new wave acts such as The Cure and New Order. Only By the Night is effectively a sequel to 2006's terrific Because of the Times, their third record and the first where they nailed their own sound, a striking amalgam of bluesy vocals and post-punk primitivism. In comparison Only By the Night consolidates rather than advances their style. The appropriately incoherent "Sex on Fire", already a chart topping single, is catchy but sounds lightweight next to songs like the fierce "Crawl" and the stadia-ready "Cold Desert" and "Manhattan". The dissonant, almost amateurish "17" is most out of place, though Caleb Followill still bawls it with the same passion he brings to even the clumsiest couplet. More notable are several sparse romantic pleas that often borrow licks from classic Southern soul. The yearning "I Want You" is little more than its title, but it certainly convinces, while "Revelry" and the vulnerable "Use Somebody" show signs of impending maturity. Only By the Night's simplicity certainly has a wide appeal. --Steve Jelbert

They sing about THE DEVIL! July 31, 2010 Reijo Piippula (Turku, Finland) This isn't funny they sing about hell and the devil! Why don't they trust Jesus instead. Their biggest hit "To Make Love in Flames" or whatever it is - it is just terrible! I also known one who likes this band - she is terrible! I do not forget you vetuka!! These guys cannot even play guitar or drums - they cannot sing! The lyrics and melodies are just terrible. This band is just like Metallic!
-**- July 20, 2010 Ms. D. Chauvin (Bath England) There's just two or three good songs . These 3 are really good in my opinion but the others are ok .
Brilliant!! May 30, 2010 V. Descol (Felixstowe, Suffolk, UK) I love Kings of Leons and this album is brilliant. It was a bargain and it's so easy to download from Amazon. I'm keeping an eye out for another great album at a very reasonable price. Thanks Amazon!!
No substance Radio friendliness May 23, 2010 Gmcevoy (Belfast) Just cannot get into it whatsoever. More a collection of hits rather than an album. I see the words 'sell out' getting threw about in some of the negative reviews but I doubt that's the problem. This music, their new image, moving up to arenas etc is more a result of the music industry than a reflection of where the band want to be imo. The only way to make that step up from quirky and different to big sellers is by making crap that you don't want to make (ie. this whole album).
A real case of 6 of one and a half dozen of the other. In order to widen your fan base you have to make music that will alienate your die hard fans. I know this all too well as a long time U2 fan and knowing where they went from 2000 onwards. I saw Kings Of Leon here in Belfast supporting this album and their massive rise to fame was summed up by the crowd. Big arena, sold out, dead crowd until Sex On Fire came along, then dead again until Use Somebody (all the while the band were banging out smashers like Trani, Wasted Time and Taper Jean Girl with all the gusto from their old days). This is a poor album by all standards and especially KOL's own standards. I though Because Of The Times was slightly experimental for the band but it just seemed to be a stop gap to this world dominator. Because of the times eh? . . ..
I'll await the next instalment.
Oh dear: Kings Of Leon have sold out. May 3, 2010 A. C. Jeffery (Lewes, East Sussex United Kingdom) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is the kind of music that the twelve year olds at the back of your bus play on loudspeaker. It's bland dad-rock U2 would be proud of. Over produced with no soul in it at all. This wouldn't be so sad if KOL didn't used to be one of the most brilliant, energetic and inovative bands of the 21st century. Don't buy this. Please please please please please don't. Buy their first two albums instead and fall in love with their raw genius.
