Backspacer, the ninth studio album by Seattle’s Pearl Jam ought to raise eyebrows amongst those who’ve long had Eddie Vedder and crew pegged as glum grunge miserablists. Commencing with "Gonna See My Friend", an urgent punk stomp with the energy of a lit firecracker, this is a record that feels like a conscious attempt to shake off the cobwebs and pen a few upbeat stadium anthems along the way. While not to denigrate some of Pearl Jam’s more mournful, introverted work, it feels like the right move at the right time: "The Fixer" is a snappy number indebted to early '80s new wave, fitted out with celebratory guitars and --no, really-- handclaps, while "Just Breathe", described by Vedder as "as close to a love song as we’ve ever gotten" is genuinely touching and surprisingly straightforward, simple sentiments born up on fingerpicked acoustic guitar and sweeping cello. Doubtless Backspacer will remain something of an oddity in Pearl Jam’s catalogue, but it’s hard to imagine any fan of the band not appreciating this detour along the sunny side of the street.--Louis Pattison
