Amazon.co.uk Review
Forget Rated R, those widely circulated photos of Robyn Rihanna Henty after her assault at the hands of ex-lover Chris Brown were X-rated stuff. All of which adds a certain poignancy to her fourth album, and first release since unwittingly becoming a poster girl for victims of domestic violence--certainly her sadder songs now seem loaded with a previously unsuspected melancholy. The new empowered Rihanna is a saucy, scary minx, dressed up in dramatic fetish gear by German photographer Ellen von Unwerth, and a long long way from the Bajan beauty queen who charmed us with the sunny "Pon De Replay". A hit as huge as "Umbrella", its chart reign longer than a British winter, redefines expectations, and unsurprisingly Rated R is full of slick, expensive sounding contemporary R&B confections such as the single "Hard", featuring a turn by Young Jeezy, and the defiant "Wait Your Turn". More intriguing are ballads such as the unusually bleak "Stupid In Love" and the heartfelt "Russian Roulette", with its implicit challenge to a tormentor. "Rockstar 101" features Slash, to no great effect, but "Photographs", produced and penned by the astute Will.I.Am, sounds like another smash hit in waiting. Oddest of all is the corny flamenco of "Te Amo", where a Sapphic senorita proposes lady love to an unenthusiastic Rihanna. To be honest you’d think she might be off men for a while, but that would place Rated R in a totally different category.--Steve Jelbert

5 out of 5 stars So good I bought two copies   July 10, 2010
will
There is a mix of good and bad songs in this album, mostly good though although 'Te Amo' isn't to my taste the rest of the album is amazing. The best song in the album is between 'Rude Boy' and 'Wait your turn'.
I recently went into my Itunes top 25 played and i had played 'Rude Boy' 150 times.
Definently an album to buy if you are or aren't a Rihanna fan

3 out of 5 stars I expected better   July 8, 2010

Not terribly impressive. I can't help feeling that the album's a bit cheap. In fact, it's no showcase for Rihanna.... that she can sing is just evident here, not exemplary. There are some nice melodies and harmony but sometimes it's just a bit too cheap. G4L is an example- those lyrics just don't go with the melody. And sorry- songs glorifying revenge and 'guns in the air' are just not going to get my support, ESPECIALLY these days.

The new single (not on this album) `Love the way you lie' with Eminen shows that Rihanna seems to need help to be good these days- by herself here, she's not doing so well.

I'm waiting for her to REALLY break free and mature....and REALLY sing!

3 out of 5 stars Some will like this, some won't   April 22, 2010

Torn between 3 and 4 with this, as I want to give her credit for changing her sound and growing. Also, these songs grow on you and I think I will grow to like it more.

This is a big change in direction from Rihanna's previous work, and I think that's a good thing. It's good for an artist to change and grow. The album is a mixture of quite dark, emotional music and also some slight "gangster-ish" stuff. It's clear that a lot of it has come from her experiences in an abusive relationship with a certain well known R&B star.

I would recommend that people take the time to listen to this album and understand that it is different from her other work. Don't rush to conculsions yet, listen to what she has produced and then decide if you like it.

Personally, I am not a huge fan of the "gangster"-type songs on this, though I do find "Hard" rather catchy. This is just a personal thing though, because it saddens me that Rihanna's experiences with love might harden her inside and outside. In terms of catchy, dance songs, you can't go wrong with "Rude boy", which (when you stop and think about it) has surprisingly explicit lyrics! Let's just say I would be disturbed if a young kid sang along to this! Great song though.

My favourite song on this album is "Stupid in Love". It's a song about being in love with someone and trying at it even when it's obvious that the other person is cheating or whatever. It does have a positive swing to it though, as near the end of the song it becomes clear that Rihanna is singing about leaving the guy, where she sings about how he won't realise what he's got till she's gone ("which one of us is really dumb?" she asks). It's a catchy, beautiful song with a sad feel to it.

Russian roulette is also a sad song, and it's fairly deep. I think it speaks strongly of her experiences with CB. At first I didn't like it, but when I thought about the lyrics more and the meaning it really grew on me. Don't dismiss it as "depressing", Rihanna is writing about her feelings and experiences here, and it's immature to dismiss this as "depressing". Another good song is "Cold case love".

Overall I would say that many of the songs are not as catchy as her previous work, and also some like me may not be totally wowed by her "gangster" lean on some of it. However, there are some really good songs on this, and it's interesting to see her change and grow as an artist.

4 out of 5 stars New Direction   March 29, 2010
Jake Tuner (London)
Rated R is in my opinion Rhianna's best album to date. Definitely a lot more influenced by rock music than her previous pop/R&B albums Rated R has no fillers on it and pretty much all of the songs could be released as singles. It is a lot darker than previous albums and many songs seem to be autobiographical including songs that seem to deal with her highly publicized split from Chris Brown.
Tracks that you have to listen to are Photographs, G4L, Fire Bomb and Rockstar 101. Also included on the album are the smash hits Russian Roulette, Hard and the infectious Rude Boy.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic album!   March 27, 2010

an amazing album by Rihanna. At first I thought, Good Girl Gone Bad was a pretty impressive album - so it would be hard to top? But infact it has!
Mad House (intro) 10/10
Wait Your Turn 10/10
Hard 10/10
Stupid in Love 10/10
Rockstar 101 10/10
Russian Roulette 10/10
Fire Bomb 7/10
RudeBoy 10/10
Photographs 10/10
G4L 10/10
Te Amo 6/10
Cold Case Love 10/10
The Last Song 6/10

Personal favourites of mine: Photographs, G4L, Wait Your Turn and Rudeboy.

Definatley a good buy for Rihanna fans.
