Disappointing July 30, 2010 Ian Harvey Read (Norwich, Norfolk United Kingdom) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
People have been really raving about Midlake's latest work, so I checked out this album. It was a really disappointing dirge. Very bland, uninspired songs.

Overrated May 5, 2010 P. Bailey (Wiltshire, England) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
If there were no gaps between the songs you would never know when one finished and the other started. A great record if you are having trouble getting off to sleep.
70's Folk-Rock Wonderfully Revisited April 19, 2010 Harry Flashman (Edinburgh) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm a big fan of Midlake & this album was a bit of a disappointment to me on the first few listens.
I know that the band's music is changeable, from the Radiohead style of Milkmaid Grand Army through to the quirky Bannerman & the more classically americana driven Van Occupanther, I've never found their music anything less than wonderful - The Courage of Others however, asks a little more of the listener.
Initially I found the album to be a little low key & the songs very similar to each other. I persevered however & after seeing the band live in Glasgow the whole album seemed to make much more sense. Repeated listening reveals rich rewards & discovery of multiple layers throughout the album. Eric Pulido's backing vocals are absolutely incredible - for me they could be mixed a little more prominently in the album but that's a minor detail.
For anyone who liked Steeleye Dan, Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull, Wishbone Ash or any fan of beautifully wrought songs, harmonies & thoughtful lyrics this album is absolutely worth the effort.
A future classic!
