Port Isaac's Fisherman's Friends September 7, 2010 j.cosgrove This CD is simply great and is the best one I have bought in ten years. It grows more and more on you as the Fisherman's Friends engender such joy in the way they sing. To me, it is a bit spoiled by the loudness of the drums and some of the instrumentation but, even so, I still keep wanting to play it which is saying something. My personal favourite on the CD is The Cadgwith Anthem which is beautiful as the Fisherman's Friends use such lovely harmonies especially when they sing it without instruments. They do not go flat as with so many groups and singers. I am simply "blown away"!
Spoiled by the music business machine September 2, 2010 mtm Great songs and singing but the production treatment, with the vocals laid down to a click and the instruments added separately, robs the music of the natural musicianship of the singers, the raw drive which gives it its power and interferes with what these men otherwise brilliantly preserve for us all.
All the same, great to see them bringing the music out to an audience that might not otherwise have heard it. Shame the music business machine stuck its oar in or at least didn't have the foresight to advise to keep it simple and so preserve what makes what they do so good.
Unaccompanied for the next album I say. Have the confidence to keep it real.
Its a matter of taste but ... August 30, 2010 EllaGuru (Essex, England) I have to say that the very high quality arrangement and production of the songs on this album just wasn't waht I was expecting to hear (sorry Rupert Christie - it's what you do isn't it?) I'm sure a lot of people will like it - but I didn't. Just be aware that the album sounds like it was recorded in a studio (which it was).
Superb !!! August 23, 2010 FABI This CD is a must-have !!!
Bought it for my husband who is a fan and also took 2 copies over to France for my French brothers-in-law who loved the variety of music styles and , like us, the themes loaded with emotion.
Any one who love sea shanties will love this CD, once you start listening, you simply cannot stop listening, the music penetrates your very soul and leaves you wanting more.
This group of long-time friends from Cornwall have immense talent and we hope to be able to listen to them live one day on the beaches of Port-Isaac !
