Fair to middling August 23, 2010 Koobi (England) Started out as a nice, relaxing album. Given a few listenings it has become somewhat irritating and hasn't been listened to by me for a while. However, my wife loves it so it is often played in the car. They are comfortable middle-class individuals who make moderately interesting music who will last for a while then return to lovely academic middle-middle class life. Says it all really.
Brilliant August 16, 2010 N. J. Flint (UK) This is simply a brilliant album. Played non stop for days and would thoroughly recommend this.
bloody brilliant August 5, 2010 aaaaaa Bloody brilliant i love this album. You know when you have a fave song on an album that you keep on repeat..? Well on this CD i have had nearly every song on repeat at some point. Gorgeous.
Superb debut album. August 5, 2010 Mr. M. L. Hawes 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Stornaway is a name that immediately conjures thoughts of wild coasts, folk tunes, Scotland and traditional instruments and whilst they don't sound like Fairport Convention with a Scottish slant, they do have a certain earthy quality that has lead to this rather fine debut album.
I hadn't heard anything about this lot before I heard the album, which meant it was bound to be a surprise, and it did not disappoint.
There's a joyous feel about the whole record, whilst it's rooted in folk it certainly feels very relevant today with its subject matter and soaring tunes. I'd imagine live it would bring about a really stonking live show.
As an album it has that most important of qualities, staying power. It's been on my ipod since I first bought it and has had over 10 full run throughs as well as forming part of a great genius mix on my computer sat amongst better known Brit bands.
If you like Turin Brakes, Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, or Pentangle, you're in good company here, but Stornaway sound much more relevant in todays world. Buy this and find one of the sountracks to the summer of 2010.
Brilliant.
Excellent tunes and lyrics - hat more could you want? July 27, 2010 Richard I bought Beachcomber's Windowsill by Stornoway unheard on the recommendation of my Barber who is very much in touch with a wide range of decent music. Like many of the best albums, the appeal wasn't instant, it took a couple of listens to really apreciate just how good and unusuall this album is.
Having now watched a few youtube etc videos of the band performing live I realise just how tallented they are. I look forward to seeing them on tour in Manchester later this year.
All the songs are good but I particularly like 'The end of the Movie' 'Fuel Up' and the two singles I saw you blink and Zorbing.
