5 out of 5 stars It grows on you   August 20, 2010

First hearing - not sure a couple of tracks stand out. After three or four times? No doubt whatsoever this is an excellent album. You have to give this album a few listenings before making up your mind. This album is now constantly on in my car I like every track on it. Seth just has the knack of writing catchy tunes and melodies. If you are thinking of downloading - don't just download the tracks which appeal to you straight away, if you do you will miss out on some real gems. Only one gripe and not enough to lose a star - a lyric sheet would be nice and even an explantion of what some of the songs are about - maybe next time?

Another fantastic album from Seth Lakeman. I enjoyed this as much as the last which for me was the DVD at the Minack. Just a bit peeved that that was being offered as an extra in a package deal for very little more although I thought it was worth every penny at the original price. This makes the package deal a tremendous bargain.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best   August 6, 2010

I have always been struck by the experience of seeing Seth live compared to recorded version. The sheer energy, particular his fiddle playing, is obviously difficult to capture in the studio and transfer to CD. That energy has mostly made it into this album however. The attention grabbing opening track `Hearts & Minds' is full of life with some great strings, percussion and rousing choruses. It sets the scene well for an album which I really think is one of his best. Yes it has more 'production' than some in the past, but that is no bad thing if it is as excellent as it is here and lets the artist explore new ideas. In any case, there are plenty of tracks to appease the traditionalists such as the excellent, stripped back `Changes. `Stepping Over You' is probably my favourite track with a great tune and interesting sound, the chorus carrying a hint of that Swedish folk influenced palindromic super group !

This album brings a new dimension to my Seth Lakeman collection and really showcases an artist at the top of his game and willing to take his music in new and interesting directions.

2 out of 5 stars What a shocker   July 26, 2010

This is by far Seth Lakeman's worst album, which is very disappointing. He seems to have lost the direction which made him "famous", and has clearly been spending far too much time with the Levellers. He sings about how sad it is that soldiers die during wars, which is something so radically unprofound. Hard working Man, co-written with Mark Chadwick, sums up the patronising tone of the whole album well.

A folk album not relevant in modern times.

The first thing to say is that this album repays repeated listens - nice n loud with good quality headphones! I have heard others talk about Lakeman moving towards the mainstream but any album that features acoustic folk instruments quite so front and centre is hardly pop.

Track 1 (Hearts & Minds) reminds me in places of The Levellers at their best - rocky and heavy on the violin. Really gets the heart pumping. Tiny World is gorgeous and folky with a touch of Dexie's Midnight Runners in the chorus. Spinning Days, a thoughtful slower number with a touch of the Kate Rusby about it (more in the combination of what sounds like a banjo or mandolin and accordian than lyrically).

Stepping Over You is just gorgeous. For me the standout on the album. "Changes" has a baseline that reminds me of 80's Paul Young. Hard Working Man has a fantastic chorus. Preacher's Ghost sounds like a typical Seth song and then the chorus starts - is that a jew's harp I can hear in the background? And the Paul Young bass is back in the final track.

Overall, brilliant - no poor tracks and it gets better and better the more you listen to it (a mark of genius). Fantastic production/mixing with the bass instruments brought to the front giving the music a feeling of depth perhaps missing from his earliest albums.
