5 out of 5 stars Back and better than ever   September 8, 2010
Mark Clark (Richmond,London England)
After an absence of a studio album for serveral years this was expected to be a good old style Maiden outing, how wrong was that thought. Maiden have taken their dependable and very metal style and had some fun with trying something different. There are songs within songs, where there are winding and rythmic music segments and then Bruces vocals, tracks 1 and 6. Its not something unfamiliar but you have to give the whole album a repeated listen to, to extract your favourite(s), and you will. I have found myself singing the haunting track 10, When the Wild Wind Blows and I think this will become a classic 'live' track all around the world. If there is one strand throughout it is a rather foreboding 'the end of the world' is on it's way. As a newish fan of just 4 years, and I might be 50 and grew up with Thin Lizzy and Zepplin, I have all of Maidens ablums and seen them live, this album is a must for any metal fan, it will not disappoint. El Dorado is 'home cooking' Maiden the rest is just brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Iron Maiden have done it again   September 8, 2010
Michel Fustin (Kyoto, Japan)
Since their re-appearance with Brave New World ten years ago Iron Maiden have shown us that they have not lost any talent or inspiration. I am not a hardcore Maiden fan, and I have actually never listened to Killers despite the fact that it seems to be for many the best Iron Maiden of all time by which all shall be judged. Whatever. I don't intend to die tomorrow, so I'll listen to it, one day, when there is no new album like The Final Frontier to listen to.
There are many very negative reviews around. I remember a very grim review by a Scottish man complaining he can hear the arthritic joints of the band members when they play. This is absolutely NOT true, and because the reviewer himself probably cannot play anymore his guitar or whatever he used to play 20 years ago, he feels like being rude to other people (English folks, incidentally) how have been around much without losing any talent.
Another, a one-star review this one, is based on the fact that the vinyl version of The Final Frontier is not of very good quality. That's about the material, not the content. Inappropriate. I don't care for vinyl, we are in the year 2010. Maybe somewhere is giving a one star as well because there is no magnetic tape!

Anyway. I am writing this review while listening to the album for the first time. Just now is When the Wild Wind Blows, and every new song has me writing faster and more motivated to tell you all how this album is great and uplifting.

If you want another Killers or another Piece of Mind, just buy another copy of them and you'll get exactly that. If you want to discover how Maiden can still evolve and create greats novel songs, while still staying unmistakably Maiden, get The Final Frontier.

Iron Maiden really deserve our respect. Incredible album.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing unespected   September 6, 2010

Well, about "The Final Frontier", i didn't find anything so uncommon, the base music is maiden "as is", you can ear some unfamiliar to maiden elements, but that's just some arrangements. The album itself brings nothing new apart the worst ever Bruce vocal performance. I don't want to sound rude here, but the truth is that his voice sounds like he is asfixiating, limitated to a low end, and some times looks like he cant bearly handle to stay in tune. Age? Maybe...

One other thing. I do respect Maiden, they are one of my ever loved bands since my early teenages, but maybe they would need to get up to date regarding introductions. This days modern bands use to separate intro tracks from the main track and dont mix the whole thing into an unic eight minutes peace witch four and a half are of psicodelic no sense sounds until a four minutes song begins.

Other than that, its a nice album with enormous progressive songs very similar to the last couple of releases. I have this album for a month, i eard it once the first day, and its now put away..

3 out of 5 stars Prog Rock Maiden   September 6, 2010

You can listen to this album a few times and after each listening feel differently about it. Maybe that's a good thing maybe not, however what I am sure about is that after quite a few spins I still haven't been hooked by any songs on an individual basis. That may be a sign of Maiden's growing maturity - inevitable given their ages - however I can't help but wish that we could have a new album with song rabble rousing songs that could join the old classic concert pleaser's such as Run to the Hills.

However all that being said, this album works as a whole. By that I mean you have to sit down and listen from beginning to end in one hit and soak up the excellent production and multi layered sound. My disappointment is really because we have had a number of recent albums that are more like heavy prog rock efforts not headbanging toe tapping memorable tunes. In the 80's and early 90's Maiden were actually quite cool with a rebellious sound and songs that even the non converted could enjoy - albeit secretly. Recently we have had series of records that can be almost hard work to like.

The Final Frontier to me is almost dirge like and I really hope that if Maiden do another record they do something radical and come up with some proper NWOBHM songs. I'm getting a bit worn out having to almost justify to myself buying their output when much is now very average.

As for the special edition - well, I have to say not really worth the money - mainly because the online bit didn't really work for me. The tin box is a gimmick and no better than the normal plastic package and a lot less easy to deal with.

5 out of 5 stars Your patience will be rewarded   September 5, 2010

Many reviewers have said that the album needs several listens to fully appreciate it. I couldn't agree more - but believe me, your patience will be rewarded. As ever, historical and literary influences are at the heart of many of the songs. I particularly like "The Alchemist" (hands up who had heard of John Dee - should have listened more in history!). "Isle of Avalon" and "When the Wild Wind Blows" are also great songs. My favorite, however, is "The Talisman". Listening to this whilst on a windy coastline in Cornwall recently made the maritime lyrics seem very poignant!
